Founded in 1954 by the visionary Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy, Cancer Institute, Adyar has grown from a modest clinic into one of India's most respected comprehensive cancer centers.
Our institute is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art cancer care that is accessible, affordable, and compassionate. We serve a diverse population across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with many patients traveling from rural areas for specialized treatment.
As a tertiary care referral center, we offer the full spectrum of oncology services—from prevention and early detection to diagnosis, multidisciplinary treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care. Our integrated approach ensures that each patient receives personalized care tailored to their specific condition and needs.
Our campus spans over 10 acres in Adyar, Chennai, housing advanced diagnostic facilities, modular operating theaters, dedicated radiation oncology bunkers, a fully equipped intensive care unit, and comfortable patient wards. We are recognized by the National Cancer Grid (NCG) and are an ISO 9001:2015 certified institution.
Education and research are fundamental to our mission. We run accredited residency programs in surgical oncology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology, training the next generation of oncologists. Our research division actively participates in national and international clinical trials, contributing to advancements in cancer therapy.
The Institute operates on a cross-subsidy model, ensuring that no patient is denied treatment due to financial constraints. Through our charitable trust, we provide substantial financial assistance to economically disadvantaged patients, covering part or full treatment costs.

Cancer Institute, Adyar has been at the forefront of oncology research in India. We maintain a robust clinical trials program with active participation in phase I-IV studies sponsored by national and international cooperative groups. Our current portfolio includes trials in immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and novel drug combinations.
The Institute houses a well-equipped molecular oncology lab that performs next-generation sequencing (NGS) for tumor profiling, enabling personalized treatment strategies based on genetic mutations. Our bio-repository stores over 15,000 annotated tumor samples, supporting collaborative research projects.
We have made significant contributions to understanding the epidemiology of cancer in South India, particularly tobacco-related and HPV-associated cancers. Our population-based cancer registry for Chennai is one of the oldest and most comprehensive in Asia, providing invaluable data for public health planning.
Recent innovations include the development of a low-cost HPV detection test for cervical cancer screening, which is being implemented in rural Tamil Nadu. Our surgical team has pioneered modifications to radical hysterectomy and esophagectomy techniques that reduce morbidity without compromising oncological outcomes.
We actively collaborate with premier institutions like the Tata Memorial Centre, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, and international partners including MD Anderson Cancer Center and National Cancer Institute, USA. Our faculty regularly present research findings at conferences like ASCO, ESMO, and ESTRO.
